False and misleading claims about farmed Atlantic salmon are being promoted on social media by the Atlantic Salmon Federation and Wildfish UK’s “Off the Table” campaign to deceive consumers.

It has come to our attention that these organizations are receiving money from foundations and individuals with the intent to disrupt food security, harm seafood farmers’ jobs, and the local businesses that supply vital goods and services to the aquaculture food farming sector in coastal communities globally.

We wish to remind our customers and the public that farmed Atlantic salmon, farmed trout, farmed shrimp and all our other farmed seafood products are responsibly raised, harvested, and processed for grocery retailers and the food service sector.

  • Our products are regulated and approved by government inspection agencies.
  • We hold third party certifications and recommendations across all our operations. These certifications are achieved by implementing the relevant standards before being audited and assessed against the criteria in the standard.
  • Our businesses that supply fish feed value chains are Marin Trust certified and MSC or Friends of the Sea certified.
  • Health Canada’s Food Guide recommends salmon as a low-mercury, high-quality protein choice that is rich in vitamins and healthy-fats.
  • The USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the FDA/EPA Advice about Eating Fish recommends that adults, including during pregnancy, consume at least 2 servings (3 to 4 ounces each) per week including salmon as a best choice to help lower heart disease risk and blood pressure and provide key nutrients to support a child’s brain development.

As a family company, we condemn intentionally misleading campaigns about seafood that seek to deceive the public.

At Cooke, our purpose is to cultivate the ocean with care, nourish the world, provide for our families, and build stronger communities.
