Fredericton, N.B. – Cooke Inc. CEO Glenn Cooke was awarded an honourary Doctor of Laws degree during St. Thomas University’s Spring Convocation on May 13, 2025.

Good afternoon, everyone.

First and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude to President Farooqi and the leadership at St. Thomas University.

To be selected as a recipient of an honorary degree from this respected institution in my home province is truly an honour. Thank you for this recognition and for inviting me to be a part of this significant occasion. Please know that I accept this with deep appreciation and a great sense of responsibility.

I would like to recognize the Honourable Louise Imbeault, Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick and The Honourable Graydon Nicholas, Chancellor of the University, graduates, families, fellow honorary degree recipients, faculty, staff, dignitaries, and other special guests joining us here today. I am happy to be here to celebrate with you.

Graduates, today is your day. We are here to celebrate your commitment, your resilience, and your bright future. To each and every one of you: congratulations. You’ve earned this.

 I would like to pay special recognition to the recent introduction of St. Thomas University’s  program, Business and Social Entrepreneurship. It’s a bold and timely move, and I applaud St. Thomas for taking this step. It speaks volumes to the university’s forward-thinking vision and its understanding of the changing landscape of business and society today.

I’ve long believed that truly sustainable businesses must go beyond the bottom line. They must be fiscally sound, environmentally responsible, and socially committed. That’s the only way our communities and our planet will truly thrive.

In order to be successful, the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders will have to be focused on who they serve, and building positive change. Sustainable businesses are not just profit-driven, they are purpose-driven. They seek talented, skilled leaders, care deeply for their customers, and contribute meaningfully to the communities of which they are a part.

This is how we have built our company, and it is the model I believe will shape the future of business. That future is evolving quickly, but your education background prepares you well to succeed in this area.

To compete globally today, businesses must always be exploring new markets, diversifying product lines, and seeking efficiencies in order to grow in our complex and fast-moving world. This happens often through vertical integration and innovation.

But success doesn’t just come from strategies and spreadsheets, it comes from within – the people – and the passion they bring to their careers. During your studies, you have had the opportunity to hone your skills and begin to articulate your values. As you enter your next chapter, you are positioned to contribute to the world in a way that will make our community and province continue to grow and prosper.

Our people, our community members, our employees are the heart and soul of everything we do at Cooke. They are the reason our company has succeeded, and they are the reason we continue to grow.

When my father, brother and I started the company 40 years ago, we knew that we had to surround ourselves with hard-working people who were willing to learn on-the-job, no matter what role they took on.

We’ve grown from a single salmon farm and small office in Dad’s garage to nearly 15,000 employees in 15 countries growing, farming, and responsibly harvesting seafood that provides healthy meals for millions of families. Careers in aquaculture include something for everyone, we have truck drivers, vessel crews, aquaculture technicians, engineers, marketers, lawyers, accountants, veterinarians, scientists, and many more. We like to say that ‘An Ocean of Opportunity Awaits’.

 As a founder and CEO, I consider it a duty and a privilege to support our employees, not just professionally, but personally. That means encouraging them to be leaders outside of work as well.

Our culture at Cooke is one that supports our people giving back to their communities. On any given day across Atlantic Canada, you will find our employees volunteering with food banks, shelters, local churches, coaching and mentoring youth, and welcoming and supporting newcomers who are building new lives in Canada. This impact has been so powerful here that it is happening on a global scale too. Around the world, our presence in rural coastal areas is more than just economic, it’s personal, impactful, and deeply rooted in a sense of responsibility.

One powerful example is our involvement in Honduras, where our employees have taken the initiative to help build and improve local schools. Through their hard work and our company’s support, children in these areas now have better access to education and brighter opportunities for the future. This is more than corporate social responsibility, it’s a shared commitment to uplift lives, create lasting impact, and take pride in being a force for good wherever we are. When we invest in our people, their development, and their well-being, we are investing in the future of our communities and leaving a legacy of prosperity.

To the graduates here today, as you step out into the world, whether into business, public service, education, or the arts, I challenge you to lead with that mindset. Lead with purpose. It’s not just possible, it’s necessary.

As someone who’s had the privilege of building and leading a global company, I can tell you this: the best decisions I’ve made were not the ones that generated the most immediate returns. They were the ones that were true to our values, supported our people, and strengthened our community.

At Cooke our core purpose is to cultivate the ocean with care, nourish the world, provide for our families and build stronger communities. I encourage you all to reflect on your own core purpose as you enter this new and exciting time in your lives. Your education at St. Thomas has prepared you not only with knowledge, but with the insight and empathy to lead in a way that leaves a mark and a meaningful impact.

I’m deeply honored to share this moment with you. Thank you again to the entire St. Thomas University family for this recognition and thank you for the work you are doing to help shape thoughtful leaders for tomorrow.

En primer lugar, me gustaría expresar mi gratitud al rector Farooqi y al cuerpo directivo de la Universidad de St. Thomas. Me gustaría rendir un reconocimiento especial a la reciente introducción del programa de Negocios y Emprendimiento Social de la Universidad de St. Thomas. Es una medida audaz y oportuna, y aplaudo a Santo Tomás por dar este paso. Dice mucho de la visión de futuro de la universidad y de su comprensión del panorama cambiante de los negocios y la sociedad actual. Durante mucho tiempo he creído que las empresas verdaderamente sostenibles deben ir más allá del resultado final.

Deben ser fiscalmente sólidos, ambientalmente responsables y socialmente comprometidos. Esa es la única forma en que nuestras comunidades y nuestro planeta realmente prosperarán. Para tener éxito, la próxima generación de emprendedores y líderes empresariales tendrá que centrarse en a quién sirven y en la construcción de un cambio positivo.

Las empresas sostenibles no solo están impulsadas por las ganancias, sino también por un propósito. Hemos pasado de ser una sola piscifactoría de salmón y una pequeña oficina en el garaje de papá a tener sobre 15.000 empleados en 15 países criando, cultivando y capturando de manera responsable pescados que brindan comidas saludables para millones de familias.

Las carreras en acuicultura incluyen algo para todos, tenemos conductores de camiones, tripulaciones de embarcaciones, técnicos de acuicultura, ingenieros, comercializadores, abogados, contadores, veterinarios, científicos y muchos más. Nos gusta decir que les espera un océano de oportunidades.

Como fundador y CEO, considero un deber y un privilegio apoyar a nuestros empleados, no solo profesionalmente, sino personalmente. Eso significa alentarlos a ser líderes también fuera del trabajo.

Nuestra cultura en Cooke es una que apoya a nuestra gente retribuyendo a sus comunidades. En un día cualquiera en la región atlántica de Canadá, encontrará a nuestros empleados como voluntarios en bancos de alimentos, refugios, iglesias locales, entrenando y asesorando a jóvenes, y dando la bienvenida y apoyando a los recién llegados que están construyendo nuevas vidas en Canadá.

Este impacto ha sido tan poderoso aquí que también está ocurriendo a escala global. En todo el mundo, nuestra presencia en las zonas costeras rurales es más que solo económica, es personal, impactante y está profundamente arraigada en un sentido de responsabilidad.

Cuando invertimos en nuestra gente, su desarrollo y su bienestar, estamos invirtiendo en el futuro de nuestras comunidades y dejando un legado de prosperidad.

A los graduados aquí presentes, al salir al mundo, ya sea en los negocios, el servicio público, la educación o las artes, los desafío a liderar con esa mentalidad. Lidera con propósito. No solo es posible, es necesario.

Como alguien que ha tenido el privilegio de construir y liderar una empresa global, puedo decirte esto: las mejores decisiones que he tomado no fueron las que generaron los retornos más inmediatos. Sino las que se mantuvieron fieles a nuestros valores, apoyaron a nuestra gente y fortalecieron nuestra comunidad.

En Cooke, nuestro propósito principal es cultivar el océano con cuidado, nutrir al mundo, mantener a nuestras familias y construir comunidades más fuertes. Los animo a todos a reflexionar sobre su propio propósito central al entrar en este nuevo y emocionante momento en sus vidas.

Su educación en St. Thomas lo ha preparado no solo con conocimiento, sino también con la perspicacia y la empatía para liderar de una manera que deje una huella y un impacto significativo. Me siento profundamente honrado de compartir este momento con ustedes.
